CODE OF CONDUCT

All attendees, sponsors, partners, volunteers and staff at our hackathon are required to agree with the following code of conduct.

Be Respectful. Be kind to others. Do not insult or put down other attendees. Behave professionally. Remember that harassment and racist, sexist, or exclusionary jokes are not appropriate. Photography is encouraged, but other participants must be given a reasonable chance to opt out from being photographed.

Be Thoughtful. Consider and respect other people's opinions and beliefs. Everyone is entitled to their point of view and a diverse range of opinions and perspectives is one thing that allows us to create such innovative solutions at a rapid pace.

Be Open. We welcome attendees from all backgrounds and a hackathon is a great opportunity for learning and meeting new people. Be friendly, welcome and open with your fellow participants. Share your knowledge, expertise and opinions, and embrace those of other people. Consider open source licensing and use of open data and how code you are writing could be reused.

Be Awesome. Do your best and believe in yourself. A hackathon is an incredible experience for people of any ability level; everyone can make a valuable contribution. Not every project will be successful, but ideas that you believe in are worth trying. You could change the world, and if every one project that we build helps someone, saves a life or makes a positive difference, we have succeeded.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

The MIDAS Public Health Hackathon (referred to as "Hackathon") is promoted and hosted by the MIDAS MISSION 2.0 Group and the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, which shall here on be referred to as the “organizers”. Affiliated organizations include the MIDAS Research Network, the MIDAS 2.0 Group, the MIDAS Informatics Services Group, the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, the University of Pittsburgh, and Carnegie Mellon University, which here on will be referred to as the “affiliates”. These terms and conditions govern your participation in the MIDAS Public Health Hackathon. By submitting your entry and by participating (if you are selected to do so) in the Hackathon, you agree to the following:

  1. To enter: Participation is open to anybody and we invite everybody who is interested in the topic. Details on how to enter and logistics of the Hackathon are published on the MIDAS Public Health Hackathon websites.
  2. Purpose: The purpose of the Hackathon is to encourage Participants to use their knowledge and creativity to generate novel, creative and useful visualization techniques and applications to improve the state of public health in the United States and abroad.
  3. Intellectual Property Rights:All your original work is and will remain yours. You are free to use the results of the Hackathon that are your original work for any purposes. You will not hold the affiliates responsible for any other participant's or third party's use of the results of your work at Hackathon.
  4. Grant of rights: Your entry and the ideas or concepts provided by you during your participation in the Hackathon may be used and reproduced by the affiliates in perpetuity for any purpose whatsoever and you hereby grant the affiliates perpetual sub-licensable right to do so exclusively, royalty-free and without limitation.
  5. The affiliates may supply and invite you to use some of its Intellectual Property rights as a Participant in the Hackathon. For the sole purpose of your participation in the Hackathon and for the duration of the Hackathon, you are granted a limited license to use and adapt the Intellectual Property rights.
  6. Your participation in the Hackathon must only concern your own original work and must not, so far as you are aware, infringe the intellectual property or any other legal or moral rights of any third party, and must not violate applicable law or refer to or portray the affiliates in a disparaging or negative manner. Participants may flag up and define pre-existing IPR if they wish. It is recommended that such pre-existing IPR be identified in a written document before disclosure at the Hackathon.
  7. You acknowledge and agree that a third party may produce similar ideas or concepts during the Hackathon. You also acknowledge and agree that the affiliates may be working on similar ideas independently whether now or in the future. You agree not to make any claims or demands of any nature against the affiliates in relation to your participation in or contribution to the Hackathon.
  8. Winner selection: A panel of non-participating judges will select the winning entries based on the criteria listed on the MIDAS Public Health Hackathon website. The winners will be announced on Monday Feb. 29th on the MIDAS Public Health Hackathon website and other related websites.  The decisions of the judges are final and binding, and may not be appealed. 
  9. Prize: The types of prizes will be announced on the Hackathon website and are subject to change prior to the start of the Hackathon. The organizers reserve the right to substitute a prize (or portion thereof) with one of comparable or greater value, at its sole discretion.  Each participating team will designate a Team Leader and the Team Leader will be responsible for accepting the prize in the event the team should be selected as a winner. Each winner is responsible for the payment of taxes on the prize and for any other costs and expenses associated with the acceptance and use of a prize not specifically described above.
  10. Name and likeness:The affiliates may take photographs and film (audio and video) of the Hackathon to be used as a public record of the Hackathon or for publicity and/or promotional purposes. You can opt out by informing the organizers at the beginning of the Hackathon event by informing Shawn T. Brown (stbrown@psc.edu) by email.
  11. As a Participant in the Hackathon you agree to comply with the code of conduct and security regulations provided by the affiliates. These entities reserve the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any Participant acting in violation of the code of conduct. You agree that you will not to hold the affiliates for any loss or damage that may occur to you or your property while at the Hackathon.
  12. In the event of a dispute arising in connection with the Hackathon or these terms and Conditions, the parties shall attempt to settle their differences in an amicable manner.
